Video Labs Ideas!

This fall, we'll be launching our Video Labs channel. Here we'll experiment with different types of videos. We're relying on our users to tell us what they like! If there's a new format that people seem to be enjoying, we'll invest more time and create more videos of that type!

Let us know of some different video formats you'd like to see!

I have several students that have a hard time making mistakes, making choices,leaving work uncompleted and being flexible when it comes to schedule changes. Any thoughts on these topics?

Hi, I work with HFA students who have similar difficulties in their classrooms and would like videos on these topics: "I don't want to do class work it's boring." "I don't want to work with students." "I don't follow teacher directions-I do it my way."

I would love to see videos that address humor and verbal irony (as well as sarcasm) as my higher level students need this.

I'll get us started:

We're workshopping some interactive video types, some kind of games. One is a bingo type game, using emotions. Another idea is a "How is this person feeling?" game, where we encourage a back and forth with the audience. We'd focus more on body language and dive deeper into facial expressions and nonverbal cues.

I am always excited when I receive your email indicating there are new videos. The new format is the first time I have been able to find the worksheets and download. Thank you for continuing to update your site.

Is it possible to video a large crowd, like lunch at a high school and have students notice the expected and unexpected behaviors....almost like a "where's Waldo". For our more advanced high school kids, they are able to recognize the obvious, but have more difficulty with "in the crowd" subtle behaviors.

Another video might be peer pressure to do things that are totally inappropriate.

Cal, Thanks for the great videos, i use them alot! I could use one for deciding is this person joking or serious? My student have alot of trouble "reading" this one in a conversation, because the "sarcasm" part is hard to read. Pointing out the tone of voice and body language helps, but a video would b great. Thank for all your hard work!

A video about bullying and what to do about it would be very helpful. I have some kids that are being bullied because of their special needs issues and kids thinking they can take advantage of them.

I have a student who is learning the most basic communication skills. I would love to see a video showing how we engage on the most basic level . Just saying "Hi" and "Goodbye" would be helpful. Anything I can find now always has some catchy tune running in the background .

I also work with students with very basic communication needs. The "introducing yourself" videos currently feature students diving into conversation. I would love something basic such as "We look at the person...smile..and say hi". We can also say their name..like "Hi Mike". It has been very difficult to find videos that address at this level that doesn't involve typical preschoolers. I have ASD teens needing this skill. Thanks!

I'm wondering if there could be some videos on "reading the room" - where the actors do/don't STOP (check out the Setting, Time, Objects, People) and make decisions. For my older, more nuanced students, I think this would be helpful to see as I often see them in 1:1 settings!

Great suggestion! I love that they don't stop to read the room as happens on a daily basis in high school. So necessary!

I love the "read the room" suggestion.... I say this all the time, and would be great to hear it from another source.

BTW, I love your videos and wkshts, I teach 5 social skills classes, all middleschoolers and I use this toolkit all the time. It is great and extremely helpful. I am trying to get my district to pay for it for the Essential Communications groups in the whole district, that would be awesome!! Any suggestions as to how to present to the administrators?

This website is exactly what I've been needing! The video modeling has been a great asset to therapy.

Was wondering if you could consider making videos for the younger level (3rd-5th) on:

1. "Finding a Partner/Group to work with" (re: student who either doesn't initiate finding a partner, or gets upset when a partner she wants to work with already has a partner)

2. Participating in Group Work (being an active member, part of the discussion vs. just sitting there)

2. "Making up stories/Lies" (re: student who often makes up elaborate stories of things he's said he has done or others have done seemingly to gain recognition...often leaves others with a raised eyebrow)

excellent videos and video labs. some ideas:
1. more video labs about how others think about us/ other's impression on us, based on what we do/say
2. more video labs about controlling emotions
3. more video about being flexible. Being flexible can be good
4. more video about greeting people, sharing, takes turn, and other kind behaviors for younger viewers.

Great ideas! We have some of these in the pipeline for our big release of videos this winter, and others we will definitely take into account for future shoots!

I would love a video about hygiene and tidiness. Several students do not see why it is important to make a good impression in this way.

We've got 5 coming next week :)

I am not sure where to post this suggestion, so I will write it here. Please forward as appropriate. I enjoy many of your videos, but find it difficult to scroll through all of the videos. I would love a page that lists the video topics (perhaps with the text summary) without the video snapshot. That way I could see all of the topics on one screen, and determine my priorities and sequence.

Thanks for the hygiene videos, they would be even better if there was role play! Can you also do a video about "sharing the spotlight". I have a student who ALWAYS wants to be the center of attention.
