Hi All, I recent had a an observation during which I played one of these video about counting/breathing for my 1st to 3rd grade class. I received feedback that the videos on this site are to high developmentally for my students but I would rather use an evidenced based practice such as video modeling rather than a generic social skills program like the Zones. What are your thoughts?
Hi there! I'm our lead SLP and have written most of these lessons. When we started our video library, most of our users were higher functioning students so that informed the way we structured our lessons. We call these lessons "Social Skills in Action". As we've grown, we added a new category of video lessons "Modeling". These are intended for younger learners with lower level abilities because they use less language and dialogue, are shorter in length, and cover more basic skills. These are appropriate for grades 1-3 (I would recommend many Social Skills in Action for grades 2-3 as well IF the students are intermediate-high functioning). As with any therapeutic material. you can modify and scaffold where your students need it. I would preview lessons by reviewing the skill the video covers, play the video multiple times and pause to add comprehension checks. I would also check out some of our online games, Moji Match and Build A Moji are fun simple games teaching to recognize feelings and might be good for this age group. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions.
